Twenty-eight. That is how many small modular nuclear reactors the United States has now announced, per a Visual Capitalist chart from late June. Two years ago the number was three. The US is now the global leader in SMR announcements, ahead of the UK, Canada, and every other Western economy. The reason has nothing to do with nuclear policy in the abstract. It has to do with power demand. A single hyperscale AI data center draws 100 to 300 megawatts. Multiply by the number of new sites announced in Virginia, Texas, and Ohio alone, and the US grid faces a load-growth problem it hasn't seen since the 1970s. Solar and wind help but don't carry baseload. Natural gas fills the gap today. Nuclear is the honest medium-term answer, and SMRs are the honest way to get there without the 15-year build cycle of a traditional reactor. The 28-announcement lead the US has built isn't a technology story. It's a permitting story. States that clear the runway attract the capex. States that do not lose the decade. For CFOs and boards this matters in three places. One. If you're siting new manufacturing, data infrastructure, or logistics over the next five years, "cheap, firm, low-carbon power" is now a top-three site-selection factor. Two. If you supply into the nuclear buildout, your addressable market has expanded materially. Reflect it in your 2027 plan. Three. If you sell electricity, your load curve is about to change shape more than it has in 40 years. The states winning the AI economy build the megawatts. The countries winning the SMR race clear the permits. If you track how the physical layer of the economy is being rebuilt, follow along. I post on this every week.
